How To Make Your Own Beautifully Scented Wax Melts

Wax melts are scented pieces of wax, without a wick, that are melted in a warmer to release a fragrance. They are a great way to try out different aromas without having to invest in several types of candles.

Wax melts last longer than a standard candle and are highly customizable. Unlike candles, the wax does not evaporate; only the scent dissipates.

Once you can no longer smell the fragrance, you can reuse it to make more wax melts. They are super easy to make, requiring only soy wax flakes and essential oils for aroma.

Plus of course a wax warmer. This Happy Wax Signature Wax Melt Warmer is the most stylish available on the market.

If you need some inspiration for fragrance combinations take a look at our ‘The Total Guide To Blending Essential Oils‘.

Supplies:

  • Soy wax flakes
  • Plant Therapy Rosemary essential oil
  • Plant Therapy Lavender essential oil
  • Mini silicone ice tray
  • Empty tin can
  • Small saucepan

You can use any type of mold that will make small, one inch-ish size pieces.

Fill the tin with enough soy wax flakes that will fill your mold. You will need twice as much wax per total volume of the mold.

An easy way to estimate is to fill the mold with water, then pour the water into a measuring cup to check the volume.

Double that volume to get the amount of soy wax flakes needed.

For example, my mold held about 1/2 cup of water, so I melted one cup of soy flakes. I did have a tad of wax left over because liquid vs. solids does not fully equate in measurement, but it gives you a good ballpark.

Heat the wax in a double boiler until melted.

Once the wax has melted, let it cool for a couple of minutes. Then, add about 20-30 drops of your chosen essential oils to the wax. I split mine 50 percent rosemary and 50 percent lavender.

Pour the wax into the mold and let it solidify.

Once the wax is solid, pop it out of the mold.
