What Is The Best Essential Oil Diffuser? We Review 5 Of The Best

So you’ve read the 10 Reasons Every Home Should Have An Essential Oil Diffuser and you’re ready to make your first purchase, but how do you know which one to buy?

With so many options to choose from, it may be difficult to decide which diffuser is just right for your needs. Here at Natural Living Ideas, we’ve spent the past few weeks testing out and studying some of the most popular diffusers on the internet to uncover the pros and cons of each. The following are our five top picks for 2017 – representing a balanced sampling of diffuser features – as well as an accompanying list of details on each brand to remove some of the guesswork and to help you simplify the purchasing process.

Deneve Riverock

The stylish Riverock has been a favorite of ours for quite some time, so it was a natural top pick when we began our search for the best of the best.

SpecificationsDeneve Riverock

Run time: up to 5 hours

Tank size: 70 ml

Coverage: 250 sq ft

Colors: black / white

Auto-shutoff: yes

Citrus oils: safe to use

Price: $39.99 – 89.99

The Pros

There are a lot of things to love about the Riverock. This diffuser is small and unobtrusive compared to the others we reviewed – a mere 6.5” L x 4.5” W X 3” H. Also, the appearance of the Riverock is very sleek and modern, so it’s good for when you want to run a diffuser in a visible location like in a spa or at the office. The Riverock itself is so quiet that the signature gurgling / splashing sounds made by the atomizer actually sound slightly louder than with other diffusers. (If you’ve never seen one before, the atomizer creates a weak water fountain-like effect inside the tank.)

The Riverock’s controls are brilliant and simple: one large button turns the device on, cycles through all three of the light modes, then turns the diffuser back off. The LED light band that encircles the Riverock is pretty without being too bright. (On the black model, the color-changing light band silhouetted by the dark hemispheres of the ‘Rock’ create an effect which has been described as “really cool” on several occasions.) Also, for those who need absolute darkness in order to fall asleep, the Riverock emits absolutely no light when the LED’s are turned off.

As with most diffusers, the Riverock also features an automatic shutoff when the tank is empty, so it is safe to run it while sleeping or when you are otherwise preoccupied.

The Cons

Despite being one of our favorites, the Riverock does have a couple of obvious cons. It isn’t as versatile as other models in that it only has one mist setting. The small tank and short run time aren’t efficient for all-day use. Also, if the Riverock isn’t resting on a hard and flat surface, it can be very difficult to press down on the single large button which takes up almost half of the diffuser’s upper shell. Finally, the tank is a bit shallow and tends to spill a bit if you try to move the diffuser after filling it.

Best Feature

Though it may be considered a con by some, the best part about the Riverock is also the simplicity of its on/off switch. Assuming the device is placed on a desk, tabletop, or other flat surface, the oversized button which operates both the color-changing LEDs and the atomizer is reminiscent of the snooze button on an old alarm clock in that it is easy to find by touch alone. For example, if you keep the Riverock on your bedside table, you don’t have to turn on a lamp or even open your eyes to turn on the diffuser. You simply reach over and mash the back (blunt end) of the device a few times until you get to the setting you want – one push to turn on and cycle lights, another push to pause the light cycling, a third push to run the diffuser in lights-off mode.

PureSpa Deluxe

The PureSpa Deluxe is simple and sturdy, but it also looks very classy. The color-changing lights are vibrant, but not overbearing. It is also one of the highest ranking diffusers when it comes to customer satisfaction – a major deciding factor which put the PureSpa at the top of our list.

Specifications

Run time: up to 10 hoursPureSpa Deluxe

Tank size: 120 ml

Coverage: 250 sq ft

Color: white

Auto-shutoff: yes

Citrus oils: not recommended

Price: $49 – $100

The Pros

The PureSpa Deluxe has a nice deep tank and the fill line is clearly marked on the inside so you don’t need to measure your water before pouring it in. The LED lights also seem more vibrant in the PureSpa than with other diffusers. Also, the ten hour run time makes this one great if you want to be able to turn on your diffuser and forget about it. For those who like a totally dark lights-off diffuser, the PureSpa does not emit any light when the LED is turned off.

The PureSpa Deluxe looks well-made with a very professional appearance. If you want an attractive diffuser to use at work, the PureSpa is a very good choice. Also, this model is backed by a 2-year manufacturer warranty, setting it above most other brands.  (The majority of diffusers offer only a 1-year guarantee.)

The Cons

The on/off control is not a traditional button but a pressure sensitive decal on the front of the device which doesn’t always respond when you press it. Because the switch responds to touch (not pressing) it is easy to accidentally turn the device on or off if you pick it up to move it while it is plugged in. While running, the PureSpa does produce an audible electric humming noise which is not terrible, but it is louder than the other diffusers we’ve tried. Furthermore, the device beeps quite loudly every time the on/off switch is pressed – good if you accidentally press it, but also somewhat annoying.

Another very minor drawback to the PureSpa Deluxe – the color-changing LED cannot be paused on a specific color as with a lot of other diffusers. If you like that feature, then you might want to consider a different model.

Best Feature

Of all of the models on our list, the PureSpa Deluxe has the most sturdy design with a 6” diameter base and height of 7” at its tallest point. More specifically, this diffuser is bottom-heavy so it doesn’t tip over easily. Also, the lid won’t accidentally pop off if you pick it up to try to move it, so there is very little worry about spillage or water splashing out while operating this diffuser.

BellaSentials Cold Mister

Not only does the BellaSentials Cold Mister offer one of the largest capacity tanks of any diffuser, its woodgrain finish also makes it by far one of the most attractive to look at.

Specifications

Run time: up to 8 hours on high setting or 12 hours on low setting

Tank size: 350 mlBellaSentials Cold Mister

Coverage: 450 sq ft

Colors: light bamboo / dark bamboo

Auto-shutoff: yes

Citrus oils: safe to use

Price: $39 – $90

The Pros

This diffuser is absolutely gorgeous. While the two available colors obviously won’t match everyone’s décor perfectly, its woodgrain finish gives the BellaSentials a more elegant appearance than the black / white / color-changing LED’s that make up the majority of diffusers on the market.

The BellaSentials Cold Mister has a huge tank – an impressive 350 ml – and a predictably lengthy running time to match. It is also one of the quietest diffusers on our list, though it does produce a very slight hum while operating. Furthermore, two different speed settings allow you to decide if you want a lot of aroma or just a little.

The color-changing LED’s on the BellaSentials can be turned on/off or paused mid-cycle. Unlike a lot of other diffusers, the BellaSentials also has separate controls for its atomizer and lights, so you don’t have to turn the diffuser off to reset the LED cycle.

The Cons

The BellaSentials is the largest diffuser on our list at 8.5” W x 6.5” D x 3” H. As such, it requires slightly more table space than other diffusers to accommodate its wide, flat shape. Also, the inside of the tank lacks an obvious fill line, so you will have to measure out your water prior to filling, though this is a very minor issue.

Best Feature

This diffuser is perfect for overnight aromatherapy. As previously mentioned, the BellaSentials is extremely quiet and can run for a full half day on its lower setting. Also, the color-cycling LED’s are the softest of all of the models we’ve tried and when the diffuser runs in lights-off mode, absolutely no light is emitted from the device.

If you’re ready to try out the BellaSentials Cold Mister, you can purchase one here.

ZAQ Dew LiteMist

ZAQ offers a variety of colors and styles when it comes to essential oil diffusers, and picking one from the long list of available models was difficult. We settled on the ZAQ Dew LiteMist for its compact size and simple yet elegant water droplet shape.

Specifications

Run time: up to 4 hours

Tank size: 80 mlZAQ Dew LiteMist

Coverage: 250 sq ft

Colors: black / white

Auto-shutoff: yes

Citrus oils: not recommended

Price: $ 49 – $70

The Pros

As previously mentioned, the Dew LiteMist is very compact (though slightly larger than the Riverock) at around 7” in diameter and 4” tall. In keeping with the rest of the ZAQ line of diffusers, this model has a very stylish and modern appearance.

The color-cycling LED’s which glow softly from the top of the Dew LiteMist are more pleasant than those emitted by the average diffuser. Also, the cycle does have a pause feature so you can stop the lights on your favorite color should you so desire.

Aside from the signature burbling of moving water from inside the tank, this model is almost completely silent – generating only a quiet electric hum (similar to the BellaSential.) While the sound is audible when running the diffuser in a quiet setting, it is far from offensive.

The Cons

Because of the light weight and round shape of the Dew LiteMist, pressing the on/off button without bracing the back of the diffuser with your other hand can actually tip the whole thing forward which (from personal experience) has a good chance of turning your work area, carpet, clothes, etc into a beautifully-scented wet mess.

If you want to run a diffuser in your bedroom at night, but you need absolute darkness to fall asleep, know that the Dew LiteMist will not work for that purpose. Because its on/off button is back-lit by a separate blue LED, even in lights-off mode the Dew LiteMist emits very bright light. Covering up the button does mute it somewhat, but the blue glow is still quite visible through the translucent upper half of the diffuser.

Best Feature

The Dew LiteMist (or any of the ZAQ line, for that matter) are attractive, quiet and compact, making them perfect for delivering subtle aromatherapy while entertaining guests.

GreenAir Spa Vapor

Among the first essential oil diffusers to ever grace our office, the GreenAir Spa Vapor has stood the test of time and remains one of the favorites.

Specifications

Run time: up to 5 hoursGreenAir Spa Vapor

Tank size: 150 ml

Coverage: 250 sq ft

Color: prominent LED color display with silver bands

Auto-shutoff: yes

Citrus oils: safe to use

Price: around $30

The Pros

The on/off switch and light controls on the GreenAir are easy to see and operate. They also function completely independently of one another, meaning that you can turn off the atomizer and the color-cycling LED’s keep running. Despite making up around 75% of the body of the diffuser, the color-changing LED display is pleasant and not too bright. Also, in lights-off mode, the GreenAir is totally dark for those who want aromatherapy while you sleep.

The GreenAir has a deep tank with a fairly obvious fill line so it’s easy to measure out your water. It also possesses a compact bottom-heavy design (similar to but lighter-weight than the PureSpa) which prevents the device from accidentally tipping or spilling during operation.

While this diffuser does hum louder than the others (and this is coming from someone who dislikes noisy electronics) the sound is actually very smooth and oddly soothing. If you like white noise when you’re working or sleeping, you may find the GreenAir to be your perfect diffuser for this reason alone.

The Cons

The lid on the GreenAir consists of three pieces instead of just one like the other models in our review. While this isn’t the worst feature, there is some potential for parts to go missing. The outermost of the three parts – a rotating directional controller for the mist – is cylindrical and small enough to roll away and be quickly lost beneath the couch if dropped on the floor.

As previously mentioned, the GreenAir is loud for a diffuser. If you want silence, this is probably not the model for you.

Best Feature

With one of the best LED displays of all of our diffusers, the cheerful GreenAir is essentially a 6” tall color-changing lantern which just so happens to double as an essential oil diffuser.

If you want to experience the lovely GreenAir Spa Vapor for yourself, you can order one here.

Our Top Pick

Best Essential Oil DiffuserWhile all of the diffusers on our list are excellent, with their own unique sets of pros and cons; there is one that stands out above the rest.  With the largest tank and longest running time, an undeniably attractive appearance, whisper quiet operation and its only real drawback being a larger than average size; the BellaSentials Woodgrain Cold Mister has earned our award for the best essential oil diffuser on the market.

Try it out for yourself.  We’re sure you’ll agree!
