Royal jelly has been found to contain a high level of antioxidants, as shown in a 2008 study that was published in the Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry. In a 2014 study, women were asked to rate the severity of their premenstrual symptoms before and after taking royal jelly. They were given either 1,000 milligrams of royal jelly or a placebo daily over two menstrual cycles. Those who took the royal jelly experienced less severe PMS symptoms than those who took the placebo. Although the researchers note they aren’t sure why it works, they believe that it affects the body’s estrogen activity.

Research in 2012 out of the Department of East-West Medical Science at Kyung Hee University in Korea reported that royal jelly was able to regulate skin photoaging after exposure to ultraviolet-B radiation. The scientists assessed the anti-aging effects on the skin by determining the collagen content and epidermal thickness of skin tissue. Subjects who received a dietary supplement that contained 1% royal jelly extract experienced an increase in procollagen type 1 protein which suggested that royal jelly may help protect the skin against the effects of aging by boosting collagen production.

This helps the skin because as one gets older, the skin’s cell renewal process becomes less efficient. Tissue repair and cell regeneration tend to slow down, while the amount of natural moisture found in the skin is reduced. Without as much collagen, the skin also loses its firmness and becomes thinner, therefore, boosting collagen production can slow the aging process of the skin.

Preliminary studies have shown that royal jelly may be effective for relieving signs and symptoms of menopause and postmenopause, including hot flashes. This helped determine bone calcium and phosphate levels with imaging through a scanning electron microscope.

The researchers found significant differences in positive bone health in the lumbar spine as well as the proximal femur in those who took royal jelly and bee pollen. Additionally, bone tissue, calcium, and phosphate levels were increased, which indicated that both royal jelly and bee pollen may reduce bone loss due to this common and often devastating medical condition.

12. Improving fertility in males

A 2014 study published in the Avicenna Journal of Phytomedicine found that taking royal jelly may improve male fertility after analyzing sperm count, sperm motility, viability, and maturity.
