There are so many different tried and trusted weight loss methods, but few are as simple as sipping on a slimming beverage.
Whether you’re only getting started on your weight loss journey, or are just a couple of pounds away from your ideal weight, these fat burning drinks are sure to supercharge your efforts.
And, each of these all-natural, science-backed drinks bring a whole host of other health benefits too. Even better, they carry none of the negative side effects associated with commercial weight loss pills or ridiculous fad diets.
Here’s what to drink, and why:
Caffeine, the most widely used drug in the world, has a number of health benefits – one of which is the ability to help you slim down.
In a study of 76 overweight and moderately obese people, it was found that those who consumed high levels of caffeine enjoyed reduced weight, fat mass and waist circumference. Researchers believe coffee confers these benefits as caffeine boosts fat oxidation levels.
Other research discovered that the caffeine in coffee also helps increase metabolism by between 10% and 29%. When both lean and obese women were given coffee over two separate 24 hour periods, metabolism was boosted by 29% in lean women and 10% in obese women.
Of course, the type of coffee you have matters. Decaf drinkers probably won’t enjoy such intense weight loss benefits from their brew as it’s the caffeine that speeds up metabolism and fat burn.
If you’re sipping on a 400 calorie Starbucks Grande Caffè Mocha made with whole milk and whipped cream, it’s also unlikely you’re going to drop excess weight.
For best results, order your caffeinated coffee black – and stick to the Mayo Clinic guidelines of no more than 400 mg of caffeine a day for healthy adults (that’s around four cups of brewed coffee).
2. Raw Apple Cider Vinegar Tonic
From repelling insects to curing hiccups, apple cider vinegar is one staple that should be in every home. Drinking a tonic containing this raw vinegar can significantly boost your fat burning efforts too.
When participants in one study were given various amounts of apple cider vinegar along with carbohydrates in the form of white bread, blood tests showed that the higher the level of vinegar taken, the lower the blood glucose and insulin levels of participants. Keeping blood sugar levels stable is a vital part of controlling hunger and managing weight loss. And, those who consumed the most vinegar also reported feeling fuller than other participants.
Another study saw subjects lose between 1.2kg and 1.7kg after 12 weeks of consuming just one to two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar per day.
Simply mix one or two teaspoons of raw apple cider vinegar into a glass of water and drink daily. For tastier ways to get your vinegar fix, try some of these recipes.
3. Green Tea
Green tea may just be a dieter’s dream! That’s because regularly enjoying a cup or two has been proven to help with weight loss – without having to make any other lifestyle changes!
By consuming catechins – a powerful and beneficial type of antioxidant found in green tea – both male and female study subjects were seen to reduce body fat, cholesterol levels and blood pressure, all without varying their diet or exercise routine. Studies in both Thailand and Japan have backed up these findings.
And other research has revealed that green tea consumption can increase fat loss around the abdominal area when combined with exercise.
Not all green teas are equal though. The Japanese variety, known as Matcha (available to buy here), may offer the most weight loss benefits as it contains an impressive level of antioxidants – said to be 17 times that of wild blueberries and 7 times that of dark chocolate! 4. Oolong Tea
Fragrant and fruity Oolong is a healing herbal tea that has been enjoyed for centuries in China. Made from the same plant as both green and black tea, Oolong is aged for slightly longer than its green cousin.
And, just like with green tea, there are many studies which highlight Oolong’s ability to fight fat.
In 2009 research of 102 overweight people who drank oolong tea daily for six weeks, 70% of the severely obese participants were observed to have lost over 1kg in body weight, while 22% lost over 3kg. Of the obese participants, 64% lost over 1kg, while 66% of the overweight individuals lost the same.
Because it’s so rich in antioxidants, oolong offers a number of other health benefits too – meaning it’s not just for those looking to burn fat. This Chinese infusion has been found to lower cholesterol levels, prevent heart disease and inflammatory conditions and promote healthy skin, teeth and gums.

5. Black Tea
One of the most popular types of tea in the US, especially with an added splash of milk, black tea is yet another brew that helps shed weight.
When mice were fed a high-fat diet, those also given a higher dose of black tea lost more weight than the group that got less tea. Scientists say it’s because that tea contains high levels of compounds that help to reduce the amount of fat absorbed by the gut. These compounds also help can cut cholesterol.
However, these effects are cancelled out if you add cow’s milk to your mug as proteins found in the milk serve to neutralize the tea’s fat fighting powers.
More recent research found that mice given compounds from black tea burned more calories than those not given any.
Black tea also contains a small amount of caffeine, which can aid fat burn in the same way that the caffeine in coffee does.
So remember, to shed pounds enjoy black tea regularly but leave out the milk, or try it with a plant-based version like almond or oat milk.
While we all need to get enough water, it can be even more important when you’re looking for fast fat loss.
By swapping sodas and fruit juices for plain water, you’ll be staying hydrated without consuming any calories.
What’s more, research shows that drinking just 17oz of water boosts metabolism by between 24% and 30% for up to 90 minutes afterwards.
Drinking the same amount before a meal could see you lose 44% more weight over a 12 week period than you would if you didn’t drink the water. This most likely happens because water fills you up before eating and stops you from overindulging, in addition to its positive effect on metabolic action.
Foods with a high water content can aid in weight loss too. Before or between meals, snack on cucumber, watermelon and celery to keep you satiated and hydrated.
When it comes to knowing how much water to drink daily, there’s no set rule. The notion that we need to imbibe 8 glasses a day is now believed to be without any scientific basis. Probably the best way to assess your hydration level is by the color of your urine – if it’s light colored then you’re getting enough water to meet your needs.
7. Green Smoothies
A simple smoothie based around spinach, kale or other greens can boast a myriad of health benefits. Not only will regular green shakes help you hit your fruit and vegetable targets, but they reduce inflammation and prevent diabetes and heart disease.
They can also significantly benefit your waistline in a number of ways.
Firstly, they make a no-fuss breakfast, meaning you have no excuse to skip this most important meal. Research has found that those who skip breakfast are more likely to be not just overweight, but obese!
Secondly, thanks to their fiber content, green smoothies keep you full for hours meaning you won’t be tempted to snack on a chocolate covered donut just minutes after drinking one. Studies also show spinach helps boost satiety and stabilize blood sugar levels.
Thirdly, consuming green vegetables daily, particularly as liquids, can boost fat burn. One study on women saw participants enjoy weight loss and a reduction in cravings when they ate green veggies once a day. And drinking a spinach shake in the morning has been shown to significantly lower hunger throughout the day and promote weight loss.
For best fat fighting results, avoid adding high-sugar fruits like bananas and dates to the blender, and stick to an all-green shake. Try this smoothie recipe – made with cucumber, parsley, lemon, avocado, spinach and coconut water.
8. Vegetable Juice
If vegetable smoothies aren’t for you, how about a vegetable juice?
Drinking at least one glass of low-sodium vegetable juice every day has been shown to help dieters lose weight. The 2009 study saw adults who consumed at least 8 ounces of vegetable juice as part of a calorie controlled diet lose an impressive four pounds in 12 weeks. Those who followed the same diet but did not drink the juice lost only one pound.
The juice drinkers also enjoyed the benefits of an increased intake of vitamin C and potassium, and a lower carbohydrate intake.
Dr. Mercola explains that this weight loss may also come about as a result of the fact that acids are stored in fat cells. When people balance the body’s pH through alkaline foods (such as vegetable juice), their bodies will let go of fat cells and the acids they contain. He also states that those who juice may have more energy, keeping them more active and helping them burn more fat.
9. Water Kefir
Fans of fermenting will be familiar with water kefir – a drink made with water and a starter known as ‘grains’ (which are not actually grains, but a symbiotic blend of bacteria and yeasts).
This probiotic rich drink is brimming with goodness and helps maintain a healthy balance of bacteria in the gut – something which is vital for overall health. In fact, recent studies prove that by simply adding probiotics into our bodies we can help prevent or control acne, IBS, Crohn’s Disease and many neurological issues.
Probiotics also play a big role in weight management. Numerous studies have shown that obese people have different intestinal bacteria than slim people.
A 2010 study found that obese people who consumed a probiotic-rich drink for 12 weeks reduced their abdominal fat by nearly 5% and their subcutaneous fat levels by over 3%. The control group, who did not take any probiotics, experienced no significant fat reductions at all.

Another probiotic drink – this time a fermented tea – kombucha may just combine the fat fighting powers of friendly bacteria with those of black tea.
A 2005 study has highlighted kombucha’s effect on increasing metabolism and limiting fat accumulation. Just like apple cider vinegar, kombucha is high in acetic acid which helps with weight loss. It also contains polyphenols, potent fat fighting compounds.
Komucha may also help dieters drop pounds by boosting energy through its iron, caffeine and b vitamin content, meaning kombucha drinkers are invigorated and motivated to work out and stay active.
