Many doctors, particularly naturopathic doctors and alternative practitioners, are finding success combining conventional treatments with natural methods to support the body’s health. One of these time-honored remedies is black cumin oil, also known as black seed oil, black caraway oil, black sesame oil and Roman coriander oil.
Considering that there have literally been hundreds of scientifically peer-reviewed articles about the benefits of black cumin oil, revealing that there are few health problems that it can’t help the body fight off, and with virtually no side effects, it’s absolutely mind-boggling that so many people have never even heard of it.
The oil comes from the nigella sativa plant which is native to Asia. The plant has small, black, crescent-shaped seeds and is technically a part of the buttercup family. Its recorded use dates back to ancient Egyptian times, with Cleopatra reportedly using it to achieve her beautiful complexion and lustrous, shiny hair. In fact, the oil was even found in the Egyptian pharoah Tutankhamun’s tomb, dating back some 3,300 years ago. Hippocrates was said to use it to treat digestive troubles.
Black cumin oil has shown to offer numerous medicinal properties, including:
- Insulin sensitizing
Its active compounds include crystalline nigellone and thymoquinone – believed to be what’s mainly responsible for the oil’s potent medicinal properties, along with, myristic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, palmitoleic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, arachidonic acid, proteins and vitamins B1, B2,B3, calcium, folate, iron, copper, zinc and phosphorous.
Many health experts claim that it is a true panacea; able to help cure everything from allergies to hypertension. GreenMedInfo published an appropriately titled article in 2015 entitled ‘The Remedy For Everything But Death,” which summarizes its benefits well.
But, you’re looking for specific reasons to take a teaspoon every day, right? After all, if you’re like most who watch out for their health, you’re probably consuming a number of other things to support your health and well-being.
Among the long list of reasons to do so, are these nine that are sure to get you motivated to add one more teaspoon to your daily regimen.
9 Reasons To Have A Teaspoon Of Black Cumin Oil
#1. Cancer prevention
Multiple scientific studies have been conducted on black cumin oil related to a variety of different cancers, including colon cancer, lung cancer, brain tumor cells and more.
One 2012 study out of the National University of Singapore, found that the “anti-tumor effects of thymoquinone have also been investigated in tumor xenograft mice models for colon, prostate, pancreatic and lung cancer. The combination of thymoquinone and conventional chemotherapeutic drugs could produce greater therapeutic effect as well as reduce the toxicity of the latter.”
Cell studies have also discovered that black cumin oil compares to popular chemotherapy agent in the suppression of colon cancer growth, but with a much higher safety profile.
In 2014, researchers from Saudi Arabia reported that the oil was able to significantly reduce the population of living cancer cells and altered cellular morphology. They discovered that the higher concentration of the oil that was used to treat the cancer cells, the greater level of cell death, and ultimately concluded that the data showed black cumin oil significantly reduced the viability of human lung cancer cells.
Some health experts also recommend using black cumin oil for natural protection against the dangers of radiation, used in conjunction with conventional treatments.
#2. Treating type 1 and 2 diabetes
According to an article in the Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism, black cumin oil “causes gradual partial regeneration of pancreatic beta-cells, increases the lowered serum insulin concentrations, and decreases the elevated serum glucose.” The research on mice suggests that black cumin oil can prevent the development of type 1 diabetes, and increase the insulin sensitivity of liver cells, which helps to prevent type 2 diabetes.
#3. Improve digestion
As mentioned, Hippocrates himself was said to have used black cumin oil to improve digestive ailments. The seeds are considered to be carminative, which means they aid digestion and can help to decrease bloating, gas and stomach cramps. If you suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), black cumin oil may be very beneficial as it’s been shown to have antispasmodic effects on the smooth muscle of the intestine. Other conditions that cause intestinal cramp-type pain may be relieved as well.
#4. Weight loss
In a study published in June of 2013 in the Journal of Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders, researchers noted that after reviewing the literature for plants with anti-obesity properties, they found that black cumin oil was among the most effective natural remedies in the world. It’s believed to be effective in much the same way that it can help diabetics. It’s an excellent anti-inflammatory agent and has been found to lessen the appetite, improve glucose levels and glucose absorption, which can help one to lose excess weight.
#5. Longer, stronger hair – and, hair loss prevention
There is a reason that Cleopatra used black cumin oil to achieve such gorgeous, long locks. It’s known to not only strengthen the hair, but to encourage growth and even address hair loss. It isn’t yet known as to how it works, but it’s thought that it likely has to do with its anti-microbial compounds and powerful antioxidants that are known to strengthen hair follicles. As it is also an anti-inflammatory, it’s excellent for soothing scalp conditions like flakiness. It also helps to kill fungal and viral infections, so if you’re battling a problem with lice, you can benefit by using black cumin oil too.
If you’re suffering from hair loss, or baldness, you can apply black cumin oil directly to bald spots, leave it on for 30 minutes and then rinse. Another option is to combine a 1:1 mixture of extra-virgin oil and black cumin oil, and then rub it directly on balding areas.
#6. A more beautiful complexion
Cleopatra was also known to have a beautiful complexion – and black cumin oil may have been her secret for this too as it’s known to promote and inhibit melanin production, benefiting the skin and even helping to heal scars, and prevent scar formation. Some studies have suggested that it may be an especially useful remedy for this purpose.
Other research has shown that black cumin oil is as effective as the skin cream Betamethasone in decreasing the severity of eczema on the hands. It’s known to help soothe inflammation, and improve the speed at which the skin heals.
#7. Fighting dangerous infections like MRSA
Black cumin oil can fight off many different strains of bacteria, including salmonella, E. coli, listeria, staph and MRSA, all types of bacteria known to cause dangerous infections. MRSA in particular is a strain of bacteria that’s very difficult to treat with conventional medicine, in fact, it’s been plaguing hospitals and nursing homes around the world because ordinary staph infections are becoming resistant to generic antibiotics due to overuse. Thankfully, this natural oil has the ability to kill it – and it’s effectiveness has been proven in scientific studies, including a 2008 study out of the Department of Microbiology, University of Health Sciences, Lahore, Pakistan.
For internal bacterial infections, black cumin oil can be added to a drink like herbal tea, and for a skin infection, you can apply it directly to skin.
#8. Supporting the immune system
As black cumin oil contains powerful antioxidants as well as beneficial B vitamins and acids, it helps to support the immune system. It’s particularly beneficial for those with autoimmune disease, as unlike the popular herbs echinacea and elderberry, it acts differently by balancing the immune system. It increases immune function without encouraging an immune reaction against healthy tissue in the body.
Natural News calls black cumin oil “the most important oil you can put in your system.” The publication reports that studies conducted at the I.I.M.E.R. in Panama City, Florida revealed the black cumin oil was able to improve the immune system by an astounding 72 percent in as little as four weeks.
#9. Allergy and asthma relief
A number of studies have shown that black cumin oil offers anti-asthmatic effects – and, depending on the cause of asthma, it can sometimes be even more effective than traditional, conventional treatments. These same properties also make it beneficial for relieving allergies.
A 2012 study that looked at the therapeutic efficacy of black cumin oil as a treatment approach for allergic rhinitis, found it to be highly effective. After six weeks of using the oil as nose drops (applied 2 drops nasally (one in each nostril) 3 times a day), all of the patients who had experienced mild allergy symptoms became totally symptom free, while 68.7% of moderate suffers became symptom free and 25% noted improvements. Of severe sufferers, 58.3% became symptom free and 25% were improved. The biggest improvements were seen in nasal drop, followed by nasal itching, sneezing, congestion and improvement of sleep. The study authors concluded that using black cumin oil as nose drops were effective for treating allergic rhinitis, with only minimal side effects (nasal dryness was reported by 17.8% of participants).
The benefits experienced were likely to be due to the effects of the black cumin oil on immune response, as well as its antihistamine effects The scientific research backs up some of the ancient uses of the oil that are still practiced across the globe today.
